Influence Map [18 Sep 2010|08:17pm]

I tried to stick to stuff that's stuck with me for a long time, there's not a lot it seems but these are the big ones

CS Lewis - His fiction but very much his non-fiction
Bryan Lee O'Malley - Been into his art since College
Doug TenNapel - Kicked my ass into gear when I met him in College
Count of Monte Cristo - Epic adventure book, need to read it again
Pride and Prejudice - My wife got me into this, infinitely rereadable and rewatchable, ditch that zombie crap, read the classic
Orion by Masamune Shirow - I like Shirow books, but I am constantly flipping through Orion
GK Chesterton - Genius
Belle and Sebastian - Solid music, I can remember where I was the first time I listened to most of their songs, lots of bands I've grown tired of, these guys less so
The Holy Bible - King James, NIV, whichever always good, heavy to get through the whole thing and there's nuggets of weird and nuggets of great and the greatest story ever told; Jesus Christ dying for mankind's salvation
Hellboy - Mignola's art alone would be enough, there was a rough patch in the story but now it's all coming together and quite impressively. There's so much Hellboy ephemera and while I like Guy Davis I don't own any BPRD so I'll just stick with Hellboy proper
FLCL - This blew my mind in college and laid the groundwork for a lot of stories I wanted to write, and I never wrote them
Royal Tenenbaums - This blew my mind in college and laid the groundwork for a lot of stories I wrote, and they were all crap
Chrono Trigger - I remember scratching the bottom of my dad's wallet to get enough cash together for this game when it came out. It was like $75! But it was worth it. It's too easy now but it's still a pleasant playthrough
Larry Norman - My mom got me into him, he was the first Christian rock and roller but he wrote good, catchy music, smart lyrics and he played music in a much different time
One Piece - I've only been into One Piece for a year but it's a magnificent comic series, it's great that Viz has for the most part caught it up in the US.

Artmania [27 Jul 2010|11:31pm]
I've gotten a bunch of amazing art from artists, friends and readers. I need to post them now! I have been too long in doing so! Enjoy!

Alex Ahad is a fantastic artist and I'm proud to have been in two of the Lava Punch anthologies with him. I'm bad for not posting the Kailee drawing earlier! He did that one last year while the Bridget drawing was done just a few nights ago. Thank you Alex!

Art DUMPPPPPP [24 May 2010|04:19pm]
I've drawn some things lately.

Spokane Comic-Con was over the weekend. I got mentioned in the Inlander for it! They said "Comic artist Lars Brown will be there" Yes! I do live here too, by the way.

I did this for the show.

It makes note of the clock tower and the marmots that guard treasure. Very local.

I've been giving stickers to people who talk to me at shows, your last chance this year is San Diego. I would also give you one or two if you bought a book or art from me.

The actual design I went with says Item instead of Vehicle, that way you don't feel silly putting it on your laptop (like me).

More stuff.

Medusa on the moon [21 Dec 2009|06:19pm]

I did a drawing for the Monsters and Dames book for this coming Emerald City Comic Con.

I listened to the newest episode of Ifanboy and got excited when they praised Marley's work on Forgetless. I'll have to pick it up sometime.

Ransom stuff [19 Nov 2009|10:32am]
Hey, I've been drawing stuff.

I did this for an upcoming issue of Ibuki from Udon studios. I met the fine Udon lads at PAX and had a very good time with them. Somehow I convinced them to let me do a drawing for a comic and this is the result.

This week I did a t-shirt design, and I think turned out well enough to post it online before actual plans for making it have been made

It comes in Wallpaper size.

Here are a few extra drawings from the forthcoming North World: Other Sagas

And finally random character designs, secret shhhhh.

Original art for sale [04 Nov 2009|12:45pm]

Hey everyone. I've been cleaning up my office and I've gotta cut down on the amount of paper in here before the fire station across the street declares it a fire hazard.

I've got nearly all of my pages from the three North World books and some other one of a kind pieces of art. If you're interested check out the store at the North World site. You could own a drawing of a man hitting a giant lobster in the head with a cart in a super market.

Go here

Also I'm taking pre-orders for the next North World volume, Other Sagas, and I'm also selling some prints.

Vancouver - Mayhem 2009 [03 Sep 2009|01:43pm]
A photo blog, I haven't done one of those for awhile. No, I won't do one. What? I just started one! Let's go!

So on Thursday I was supposed to be in Canada to record an episode of Inkstuds, and me and the missus would have left on time but then Les McClaine's roommate brought us to Voodoo Donuts, so that plan went right to hell.

CHESTERTON [09 Aug 2009|09:29pm]
"A soldier surrounded by enemies, if he is to cut his way out, needs to combine a strong desire for living with a strange carelessness about dying. He must not merely cling to life, for then he will be a coward, and will not escape. He must not merely wait for death, for then he will be a suicide and will not escape. He must seek his life in a spirit of furious indifference to it; he must desire life like water and yet drink death like wine." - GK Chesterton ~ Orthodoxy

I wrote this at the bottom of letter I wrote to a Marine recruit. I wanted to post it on Twitter but it is three times too long.

More Chesterton can be enjoyed for free at http://librivox.org/orthodoxy-by-gk-chesterton/

Otakucon Sketches day 01 [03 Aug 2009|07:47pm]
Day 01 of Otakucon! I drew stuff when girl-Naruto's weren't yelling.

I heartily enjoy One Piece. Sadly there was no Chopper plushies at the con (for my wife). So I drew this instead. "Candy!"

I am beginning to appreciate Naruto in a purely ironic state. I'm really happy with that punch sketch though.

Bleach, eh.

Missing is the Deathstroke drawing I did and the Pikachu one (the one where he is fat, eating chips and smoking).

[29 Jul 2009|08:23pm]

Well, guess what last week was? Comic-Con. This year is particularly noteworthy for how much name-dropping I could do. But I won't! Here's some highlights.

Cons I am going to [15 Jul 2009|09:20am]
Oh man, I guess I still have like 4 conventions to go to this year.

San Diego Comic Khan. I'll be at the Oni booth 1833 at these times
Fri 5:30 – 6:50
Sat 1:00 – 2:20
Sun 11:30 – 12:50

And I'll be at the Popgun portion of Image at random times. Same with Lava Punch.

Then next will be Otaku Con in Spokane on August 3rd and 4th.

Ape in October is a maybe-maybe.

And look at this one in Canada, I'm on the flyer!

Ha, I'm right below the World's Toughest Milkman guy.

Obscure meanings [08 Jul 2009|07:46pm]
The last two pages of North World have had some little nods to various things. A reader asked me to list them, but I don't want to!

I'd rather have you guys tell me what I'm referencing. The first one to answer per reference (specify, I know I double ref'd one thing) I'll do a little sketch request and post it in reply (I'm not mailing it though, sorry), and nothing too crazy please.

So, post a comment pointing out one of the reference and where it's from and request a drawing. No repeats, just one.
